I love trail mix! I like it better when I can make my own mix. A few almonds, a handful of raisins, maybe a pinch of chocolate candies. Whatever I want, it’s in there. There’s something to be said for building my own snack. There are a few supermarkets near me that have a trail mix bar. Whoever thought of the bar should be in the Food Industry Hall of Fame. Me, I’m a salty and sweet guy, so I head for the nuts and sweets. Typically, equal parts, one can’t be over powering. Admittedly, I stay away from the spicy snacks, I feel that they throw off the balance of the snack. It’s my snack, so I’m going to have it the way I want it. Burger King had it right, I can Have it my way.

Besides the trail mix bar, how often do we get to have the items we purchase, exactly the way we want them? The pants I order are always ½” too long, they drag on the ground and are frayed within two months. In this day and age, we can get things close, but exact is tough. I wouldn’t mind ordering a sushi roll with 7 rolls in it vs. 6 or 8. Who wouldn’t want to be able to purchase a sofa that was built exactly to specifications? I’ve been looking for a Sofa with my wife for the last two weekends and I can say, that without any question, I would. The ones that we looked at were just a bit too big or small or deep or shallow.

I did the unthinkable the other day, I watched a commercial on live TV. My kids and I were sitting down to watch a basketball game and a commercial for that copper pan came on. You know, the one that tells you that you can get rid of all the other pans you own, because this one will do everything for you. No stick, no stain AND I can cook marshmallows in it the same way I cook chicken-no oil needed. My daughter looked at me and said, “dad, we can get rid of all of our pans and have just two pans to replace them.” Based on the commercial and everything that we had been told in the past 60 seconds, yes, we could get rid of every pan in our cupboard. And I bet, it would be fun to get them in the mail-2 for 1 no less!

Maybe it’s true, maybe the copper pan is the silver copper bullet I’ve been looking for, I mean who couldn’t use more space? So, I got up from the couch with my daughter and walked over to the laptop that was sitting on the counter. We navigated to Amazon.com and searched for the item that we were looking for and we couldn’t believe our eyes, the first 8 reviews were negative. How is that possible, the person on the TV told US that that the product was amazing and we wouldn’t need any other pans. In fact, I already had visions of grandeur, I pictured myself making s’mores for all the neighborhood kids and then making a big dinner for the adults in the same pan, right after. No need to rinse or wipe, simply add food.

I read the reviews out loud. Doreen wrote, “Promises more than it delivers.” Rob mentioned that his food sticks worse in this pan than in his other ones. My daughter looked at me with a disappointed look on her face and said, “I guess we won’t be buying that item, huh? Good things we checked.”

She was right, it was a good thing that we checked.

The lesson?

I’ve learned that in a world that information is abundant and we can check on the color shirt your boss wore on her first day of fifth grade, people tend to tell themselves that they’re getting the best price/service/product whenever they buy something. It’s kind of like shutting the shades when there’s a lightning storm and pretending that nothing is happening outside. The shades may be shut, but the thunder and lightning are happening outside, and you know, sometimes it can be amazing to watch and hear.

I guess the “teachable moment” to my daughter was, ask questions, be curious and just because someone speaks with authority, doesn’t mean they have authority.

The next time I hear someone tell me that I shouldn’t question their pricing or service, I’ll remember my lost s’more opportunity and take a look outside the shades.

The Knock

I was in one of our delivery trucks the other day and a person knocked on the door and asked me to roll down the window. I was a bit hesitant as it’s a bit uncommon for someone to knock on a truck door. I rolled down the window a crack and smiled and asked how I could help.

“You’re Door to Door Dental, right?” the gentleman said.

“Yes, is there something that I can help you with?” I responded.

“Can you come to my house tonight? I’ve had a toothache all morning and just moved to the area…I don’t have a dentist.” The man pleaded with me.

I wasn’t sure how to respond, was it a joke? Clearly, we sell dental supplies, right? I mean, maybe we aren’t doing a good job with marketing. Then is dawned on me, it wasn’t as much about the truck housing a dentist in the back as it was about instant gratification. The man didn’t want to check into the many qualified dentists in the area, he simply wanted the problem fixed.

My quest to find the answer continued. When in doubt, ask a five-year-old. So, I asked my neighbor. I posed the question, would she rather have a piece of average (I used the term- “OK”) candy today or the best piece of candy that she’s ever had tomorrow. She didn’t miss a beat, smiled and said,

“Both, I’d like one now and then another one tomorrow. You see, I’ll get used to the taste of the candy and will dream about it at night, so I’ll get a stomach ache if I don’t have one tomorrow.”

While I didn’t follow the stomach ache part of it, I took it to mean that she’d get used to everything good that comes with the taste. I thanked her and then pondered the answer a bit longer. I have to admit, the more that I thought about it, the more I was impressed with the maturity of her answer.

What Counts?

So, after speaking with the stranger at the truck, having a discussion with my neighbor and thinking a lot about my interactions, I’ve come to a conclusion.
